Data Conversion This involves taking data from one or more sources and changing the way it is formatted or structured and placing it back into its original file platform.
Example: Take phone number data, which is hard to report on by area code because it is written in one data field looking like this:
and splitting and cleaning the number so it is easier to report on by area code because the area code is now separate and looks like this:
Getting the number to then look like a phone number is now the responsibility of the front-end application.
Data Migration This involves taking data out of source or platform and properly placing it into another.
Example: The picture below tries to illustrate taking data from a one format, a set of Microsoft Excel? spreadsheets, to another, a relational database platform of choice.
Database Re-Write This involves the taking of an existing database and re-designing all or part of it in order to make it more useful or perform better.
